The Nobel Prize is one of the world’s most famous awards, and it is awarded to people who make exceptional contributions in areas like science, literature, and peace. The prize is named after Alfred Nobel, a Swedish inventor. When Nobel died in 1896, he left most of his money as awards for Nobel prizes, wanting to honor those whose work helps humanity. The Nobel Prizes have been awarded every year since 1901 in Sweden and Norway.
The Nobel Prizes recognize discoveries that change how we see the world—and some of the most inspiring awards have celebrated the incredible power of the immune system. From cancer breakthroughs to new insights into how our bodies stay in balance, these scientific milestones remind us how remarkable human biology is.
In 2018, the Nobel Prize in medicine went to James P. Allison and Tasuku Honjo for work related to cancer. They discovered how to release the immune system’s natural brakes to fight cancer. Their work transformed cancer care and gave hope to millions of people.
This year, the Nobel committee once again spotlighted immune system science. This year’s winners, Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi, were honored for their discoveries about regulatory T cells. These special immune cells act like peacekeepers for the immune system, preventing the body from turning its defenses against itself. Their work helps explain autoimmune diseases and opens the door to new therapies for conditions like diabetes, allergies, and even organ rejection. We want to congratulate these three scientists on their amazing discovery and thank them for their hard work. The more we know about the immune system, the easier it is to support it.
